Today was supposed to be a short day but it ended up being about 54 miles. The day started out with rolling hills and flat riding. But once we approached the Susquehanna River we encountered a lot of long steep hills. The last 15 miles were very tiresome for me. We are camping in York Furnace, PA along the western shore of the Susquehanna River. We should ride into Maryland tomorrow.
I was surprised how wide the Susquehanna River is here. It almost looks like a lake.
We passed a lot of corn and soybean fields. Some of the corn fields, like the one above, had nice green corn stalks. However, many of the fields contained brown withered stalks - these fields looked like a total loss.
One interesting thing about this area is the lack of food stores, restaurants and convenience stores. In contrast, every small town in VT and NH has at least a general store and many have a gas station/convenience store.
