After a 60 mile day we are at a motel in Suffolk, VA. Unfortunately, there are no campgrounds in the area so it is two nights in a row in a motel. (Actually I don't mind because I don't like camping as much as Larry and Hal do).
Turned out to be a nice day to ride - mostly flat rural roads with minimal traffic. Despite the weather prediction of rain we only had a few minutes of very light rain that didn't even merit putting on a raincoat. However, the sky has now turned very dark. Hopefully, it will rain tonight and be nice tomorrow.
We have passed lots of farmland but for the first time on the ride we passed both cotton and peanuts growing. We haven't seen any tobacco growing in VA. Perhaps we are not riding through the right area for growing tobacco.
The area we rode through today lacked any stores or restaurants so it made for a long ride between breakfast and a late lunch. Hal tried grits for lunch and he liked them. I once tried them and I thought I was eating wallpaper paste! I guess Hal has no taste.
The route had an inordinate number of turns today so Hal came up with a new system. He wrote the turns on a post-it note which he stuck to the top of his handlebar bag. Then he could read the turns from the note without having to stop and study the map.
Larry left before us this morning so he could spend some time at historic Jamestown. I just spoke to him on the phone and he heading to the motel after a few wrong turns this afternoon. Hopefully, he will arrive before it starts raining.
Total mileage update: 1494 miles since we left Lubec, Maine on August 12.
We should cross the state line into NC tomorrow morning.
